| Wannabe Handy Man | I want to change my ugly, old white vent and replace it with a stainless steel microwave so I can get more counter space by getting rid of the counter top microwave, and to match my fridge and more importantly, the stove. Sears wants $150 to install it. Anyone know how that can walk me through it? possibly a link? |

Rep Power: 10 ![]() | It can be tricky. You need a power outlet in the cabinet, or can somehow snack the cord to an outlet without looking retarded to plug the thing in. If the $150 includes that, i'd say pay it. lol but, it probably doesn't.

The install process is very simple and the directions that come in the box are usually pretty thorough. Basically the process is as follows: 1. Unpack Box 2. Obtain bracket to mount to wall. 3. Mount bracket to wall using drywall screws (into studs) and the included bolts (into the drywall). Ensure this is level. 4. You'll need to drill three holes in the upper cabinet, two for bolts that utilize the cabinet for support, and the other for the power plug. There'll be a template for this in the box. 5. Get the microwave, get the back supported on the bracket. Its a good idea to have a buddy help you out with this. Youll need to get the bolts and fender washers through the cabinet holes and into the microwave. Tighten. 6. Plug it in and make popcorn.

Rep Power: 10 ![]() | call me lazy, but for $150, i'd have them do it and deal with the power running.

Rep Power: 5 ![]() | I highly doubt it'll be 150 bucks with running power. Thats more than likely just for basic installation. They don't have any idea as to what the site is like to include parts/electrical installation...

Rep Power: 0 ![]() | If you have any cabinets above your current hood be wary. Because of the obviously noticable difference in height b/w a microwave and a hood, your microwave will hang down closer to your cooktop, and possibly below the adjacent cabinets (this looks funnny). This may be ok, and may not. It may also create an inconvenience when trying to cook. Another option is removing the upper cabinet and triming it down. This is not the easiest, and may not be an entirely fruitful effort, but may have to be done. |
