Rep Power: 0 ![]() | I live on a corner lot. My back yard is a park. MI have a driveway in the back yard, It is half assed and doesnt look very good. Part is broken concrete the other is black top. My dad decided he wants to buy my a two car garage for my back yard. I am very good with electrical and plumbing. I plan to run water out to the garage I am not sure why yet, but I at least want to put a spicket on it. My dad has some stranded copper 8 awg wire. I can use to pull power out to the garage. I will need to upgrade my service too. I have a 100 amp now, and I want to put a 100 amp service in the garage. I like to weld and that will pull 40-45 amps. Should I build it from scratch or buy a kit? I know I need to get a permit first but I wanted some advice. I am in the middle of a bathroom remodel that I am thinking about putting off until the garage is done since I can work on the bathroom through the winter. |

Rep Power: 2 ![]() | I have never really been a fan of "kits" persay whether it was a shed or a garage they never seemed to go together perfectly. In all reality a garage is not difficult to build if you understand the basics. If it were me I would look at some plans, find one I like or parts of ones I like and have local lumber yard pull an estimate for material costs. If you have a good pad poured you should have it framed and sheeted in a weekend witht the help of a couple of buddies. |

Rep Power: 2 ![]() | I think you mean POLE barn or shed. That is always an option but you have to remember that the structure is usually steel and sheet metal which can require special skills, tools and machinery to intall/erect it yourself. If it is a simple garage then I would assume the cost would be more for the pole barn than a traditional wood framed building. Also if you live in a residential area there are probably codes determining what type of structure can be built and to what size. I know for one if my neighbor tried to put up a pole barn/shed within site of my house in the city I would bitch like crazy. Yeah they look nice at first but after years of weather they can look pretty run down. Plus they tend to be bigger than you average garage. Last edited by chestercheeto48; 05-16-2008 at 10:18 AM. |
