a ton.

I paid 269 for the ton of pellets.
I anticipate it will last me the whole winter, if not a few bags short.
i will still be running my furnace (because my hot water is on it), but i tanked up last in april. To date, i used only 1/4 the tank (for showers, dishes, etc etc). So, i have more than enough oil to go all winter for just the water heater portion of it.
I will be keeping the thermostat at 55, and occasionally running it up high to make sure no lines freeze and pop, but 90% of my heat this winter and all winters from now on will be form the stove.

At 2.59 /gal oil last winter, i was paying out roughly 400-500 every 5 or 6 weeks when they came.
this winter, at 4.69 a gallon that would easily nearly double.. probably 750-1000 range ever 5-6 weeks. which is just absurd, and which is why i bought the stove. I'm planning to use $100-150 every 5-6 weeks instead thus, saving me 300+ a month at last years oil prices, and nearly $600 a month at todays oil prices.

there's roughly 5 months of heating. nov - march.
600 x 5 = 3000.

i paid 3600 for the stove installed, and 269 for the ton.

So, this year, i'm out a little cash on the initial unit.

next year, i have 269 to spend again on another ton

by year 2, buying the stove is an 'ROI'

My mother was having trouble lighting her stove last night also. I wonder if its just the weather. Looks good in there.

With those Ikea sofas try them before you buy them. Some of them feel like you are sitting on a rock. A lot of their stuff is cheaper in price for a reason.

i only ran it for a couple hours last night. it's not THAT cold yet.

I think what suprised me most after a few hours was that the living room was colder than the top of the stairs. Granted, heat rises... but it also has to travel 15-20 feet to get there.

I'm excited to not spend stupid money on oil this winter.

I'm in for 270 bucks on a ton of pellets... and, i'm pretty sure that's going to last me all winter.

The 3.5 hours i ran it last night, i used maybe 1/20th of the bag i poured in.

The installer also mentioned something to me that i have to try. Since i have central air and an attic fan right at the top of my stairs, he suggested to run the fan every now and then for a couple min to circulate the hot air. I didn't even think of that. It will suck up the hot air, and send it around to all the remote places like my bathroom around 3 corners via the CA vents.
That was my main concern with it... that it wouldn't get to my bathroom.

from the fireplace to get to my bathroom, the heat would have to travel:

15-20 feet to the top of the stairs (attic fan here),
bang a left into my room,
bang a left into my master bath hallway,
and bang another left into my actual bathroom,
and then travel in the 6-8 feet to keep me warm when i'm on the can

or, i can just turn the fan on and get it there nice and easy word.

I do that during the summer with my ac as it draws from the basement. The tech that came over said that I would actually save energy by running the fan in the on position as opposed to auto because fan draws less than my central air. Apparently when the fan is on for a period of time and draws from the cooler basement the AC acutally runs less than if it were on auto. It actually seemed to work.

Well, i just dumped bag #2 into it.

Bag one lasted me just about 50 hours I would guess.

hours:
.5 from the installer testing
3 the first day
2 the 2nd day
5pm sat to 1pm monday = 44 hours

Mostly had it on 2 / 5.

house is a good 65 degrees in most places.

i'm expecting that to drop some, as it's not bitter cold yet... but at the same time, i haven't run the furnace at all (and i will be keeping it at 55 or so to esure no freezing, and once a week running it up so the pipes don't freeze the water in them) so, a bag should last me 40 hours I'm guessing.

40 hours is roughly 2 days....
i have 40 bags
thats 80 days.

looks like i'll be about 10-20 bags short of making it through winter on 1 ton.
