Default Pellet Stove

With the findings of oil prices this year, i've decided it's probably a good idea to invest in a pellet stove.

Qui9ck shopping around the net has me around 1700-2500 ish for the unit (in-fireplace)

pellets are about 400-500 bucks for 55 40-lb bags (1 pallette)

everything i've read says most stoves use 1-5 lbs per hour depending on low or hi settings.

so, that means 1 bag will last apprx 40 hours on low (i don't see myself running it any higher)

40 hours = roughly 2 days.

so, that 400 bucks will last roughly 100 days (55x2), or more than 3 months of constant use.

I'll still be running my furnace... on 50-55 to make sure nothing freezes and that i still have hot water for showers/laundry/dishes, etc.... but getting an electric water heater is also something i'm considering...

dec, jan, and feb are the 3 coldest months that 400 bucks will replace about 1000-2500 in oil costs depending on how cold it really is.

so, year one, i'm in the whole a little bit.... but ods are, oil is only going to get higher in 09-10 as well... so by year 2 it should pay for itself, plus adds re-sale to the home.

I think i'll be heading over to Dean's Stove and Spa to do some shopping in the upcoming weeks. Probably cheaper to buy now in the summer anyway.

You will use more than 1 pounds an hour, especially in a bigger house. This is from experience with a 15 year old stove that my parents had since new. But a lot depends on how hot you keep the place, how big the place is, and how well sealed it is. I don't know how much more efficient the newer ones are, but a tech that came out to look at it said to keep it and not to trade up.

Well, I went to deans on the weekend.

Winslow™ | Pellet-Burning Stoves | Country™ Collection

Looking about 3600 bucks installed.

The stove itself is 2400, and then there's some trim pieces i need and the backplate, and the exhaust pipe, and delivery + install. They also get a building permit for the town so its a 100% legal install should the house ever burn down because of it.

They also have pellets at a reduced price for customers.... 279 / ton. I was speculating at 400-450 a ton.

Looks like 2 years it will pay for itself, plus it adds value to the home. I'm pretty sure i'm going to go ahead with it. I need to get some measurements of my fireplace and head back there to finalize the purchase.

The machine is rated at 1.3 lbs/hr on low... but it's also going to shut off when it meets the room temp i have it set to. it's rated for 38,000 BTU's in the room (not in the stove).

Even if i use 2 tons (which i won't) it will cost me 500 bucks a winter to heat my home instead of 500 a month for 4-5 months. can't beat that.

So, im pretty sure im' going to go buy this sometime this week. They are already well into august on delivey/install, so it's time to act. september/october comes quick... and with it, so does the cold nights

Maybe we're going to go and look at it. 3600 is expensive, but is still less than what I'm expecting to pay for oil this year.

yeah...

3600 initial, then 400-500 a year for fuel.
vs
0 initial, then 3000 a year for fuel

it adds up to some serious savings in the long term.

But remember pellets have gone up in price. They have gone up in the last few years. I know they were tougher to get after Katrina since a lot of the wood was being used for reconstruction.
Also check the prices with burntime enterprises on broad st right behind martin cabinets. They have always been good to us. If you are running low on pellets just try to order ahead of time. Back to basics in Terryville sells pellets too I don't know if by the ton but they are ok if you need a few bags.
