Well maybe I have it backwards. I will look into it later. But depending on where you live has alot to do with it. Shingles will still attract heat in the winter and get pretty hot.

In the middle of winter, I have climbed into my attic, and I would say if the inside of the house was 72, and the outside was 34, the attic would be around 40-45 in my house... A fairly decently insulated house, 30 yr architectural shingles, Vents on the overhangs, and 1 vent on each side of the house...

depending on climate, type of roofing, time of year. ALot of factors play in which is the ideal temp. And to be honest. I have never heard of a "ideal temp" other which stats on the installation instructions to the vent fans. which is recommended to be 101-105 for summmer. 120-125 for winter. Sorry I dont have that answer .
Those numbers are the settings for the thermostat for the electric exhaust fans.

the best temp for the attic would be what ever the outside temp is.

More and more houses are being built with them, or ridge vent. I guess it all depends on where you live. Round here , there almost famous.

I am going to just install ridge vent when my shingles arrive.
