Default Paint for Deck?

My deck pillars are painted white and are in need of a re-coat. The exposed areas are all chipping.

what kind of paint should i use? and how much do you think i need? the font not pictured is about the same distance in as the rear (a big C- shape)

Hey B,

Just throwing this all out here at once, so consume what you can. You say the paint is chipping, well if you throw paint right over broken paint your no longer protecting the wood. To ensure the paint job looks well and serves it purpose, youll need to pressure wash the railings and any areas with old paint that is chipping and cracked. Then sand the areas down to feather the paint that stayed on. Once you have the selected painted area dry, clean, and debris free you can throw an exterior enamel primer on the unpainted area. If you dont prime, your paint will not last. Then paint w/ an exterior grade oil base or latex base paint. Once you have cleaned up, sit back, crack a cool one, and enjoy your hard days work achievment.

-use top quality exterior latex deck paint if remaining paint is latex or is
oil-based with excellent adhesion

-use quality oil-based deck paint if surface has build up of old oil-based paint

-do not apply oil-based paint over latex paint

If it was me, I would buy 1gl of this paint (assuming you have oil base on their now.)
Valspar Oil Porch and Floor Interior Paint | Valspar

and 1gl of this primer.
Valspar Oil Based Multi-Purpose Interior Primer | Valspar

I'd just replace the railings with vinyl. Fuck painting.

I have no idea if its oil or latex based. it was pre-painted before i moved in. I was planning to sand it.

I like the vinyl idea.... frankly, i didn't even think of that.
just looked it up.
$20-30 a foot for the railing alone. ouch.
I probably have 100 feet of railing

20 in the front
25-30 on the side
20 in the back
10 on each stair case (so, x4)

3k for just the railings....

and then there's the pillars and all the angle pieces.

looks like its a $10k job.

screw that. i'll buy a gallon of paint instead. heh

i think i'm going to wait until spring to do this any way. I'm getting a sweet patio put in around april, and i might alter the plans a little bit to connect it to the deck a little better.

For the primer use a GOOD oil primer. Most oil primers will go over latex or oil paint. Use a latex paint exterior paint. In CT you can't even buy oil paint for house in more than a qt size anymore, unless the store has some manufactured before I think March of this year. I would recommend Sherwin Williams Duration paint. Its a little expensive but it covers well and has a lifetime guarantee is applied properly. Its a little expensive but it will last for a long time. In a lot of cases you can get away with one top coat. I would stay away from Bear for exterior, (well interior too) I used it several years ago at my moms house. Sanded it down to bare wood, primed it, and put 2 coats on. The shit fell of within 2 years. My buddy used it on his house and within 4 years it looked terrible. I would stick with Ben Moore and Sherwin.

Make sure you sand it.
