Default oil changes in yard equipment?

How often should one change the oil in things like the lawnmower? snowblower? leafblower?

hard to judge 'miles' or even 'hours' of use...

once a season?

I do it once a season but I check the oil almost everytime I start it up. It may be excessive but my grandpa got me into the habbit when I was younger.

Do it at the start of the season, or for snowblowers do it as it starts to get cold.
