Rep Power: 5 ![]() | So I noticed a crack in the wainescoating in my son's room... Decided to tear down the piece of wainescoating and replace it... Upon teardown, I notice the sheetrock behind it has what looks like dirt/mud/crap all over it... But not quite like water damage... Definately needs to be looked at... But PLEASE dont be what I think it is... Time to rip out the sheetrock and check... Aww f**k.... (Linked due to high res) http://nperkins.riotdesigns.com/house/100_0428.JPG 2 Choices now... A. Fixed Damaged Stud, put up new piece of sheetrock & wainescoating and live with it.. B. Gut room down to the studs, replace the windows, Replace the bedroom door, remodel the closet, reinsulate, re-sheetrock, & repaint the whole room... I chose B... Here is where Im at as of Friday... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Upon ripping down the last wall (Where you see the brick which is the backside of the chimney)... I found some water damage in the header... I'm going to climb into the attic before I re-rock the room & see if its coming down the chimney which I know needs repair, or if it is just the flashing that needs repair... In which case I'll spray all the water damage with bleach, put some kilz up on the 6" of drywall on the ceiling that has a little stain, and call it a day... Tonight is gut the closet & pull out the electrical to get ready to replace the studs to fix the termite damage install all the new windows.. Current Cost of Renovation: $1105. That includes 3 new Andersen 200 Windows, 1 new 6 Panel Pine Door, Door HandleSet, 2 Anderson 3000 Series Self Storing Storm Doors (I know its not the same room but I wanted them and they were on sale.. ), and 4 rolls of R13 Insulation...Just tore down the rest of the closet... What the ceiling looked like before tearing it down... ![]() The backside of the sheetrock I tore down... Yummy... Mold... Time to go spray bleach. ![]() This crossbeam is nowhere near as bad as it looks in the pic... ![]() The look up into the attic area.. ![]() The gutted closet... ![]() ![]() Maybe if im feeling saucy after a heineken or four i'll move the windows & doors out of the way and reinsulate the other wall that isnt damaged... Did some insulating tonight too... ![]() ![]() EDIT: And Yes I insulated an interior wall... I am insulating every piece of this house as I go over it. Do it once and get it over with. New Bedroom door is in... FINALLY something that DIDNT discover more damage!! This went VERY smoothly... The old door was a cheap prehung, but luckily, the shims were perfect, so it took all of 45 minutes to install... Only RETARDED Thing I did was after I got 1/2 the nails in, I realized I was using Common Nails instead of finishing nails... DUMBASS.. I'll try to pop em out and put finishing nails in, or just bash them below the face, mud it up, and paint it since i'm painting the door anyways... Its so nice having a door that opens easily, and actually closes and latches... The old one was warped and didnt close right... Never did since I bought the place... And its a nice Pine 6 panel... I already installed 2 other Cheap 6 panels in the house (Well 1 is a 3 panel you can see in the pic), but I think I might eventually replace them with Nice Pine ones like this. It just feels better when you open & close it... ![]() ![]() EDIT: GOD DAMN IT! By looking at this pic I realized the door handles are different from the two doors! MOTHERF**KER!!! ![]() Well... Started hanging rock on the good wall tonight... ![]() ![]() And more importantly... I think I found my leak on my chimney... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Looks like a cracked brick has actually pulled away a bit, and the flashing is lookin pretty shitty... Not to mention the pitch looks like it pools up right there too... There was a big pile of dirt there when i climbed up that I brushed away before taking the pics... Any suggestions on how to build the pitch up a bit and reflash it correctly so it doesnt do it again? The chimney top does not look that bad, and can DEFINATELY wait until next year... The mud has begun!! ![]() ![]() ![]() Also fixed the roof today... See post in Outdoor Forum for my little writeup... ![]() ![]() ![]() Last edited by ScrapinSTi; 09-06-2007 at 01:50 PM. |

Rep Power: 5 ![]() | I'm in the same boat... Except not bugs...but water leakage and a curious wife. She thought there was a leak in the bathroom, so she tore down the wall in her office (small bedroom), and just left it. So it turned into another..."While I"m at it..." and now that room is completely stripped and down to the studs... all I need is the two doors for it, 2 windows...and everything else I already bought...and is ready to be installed. |

Rep Power: 5 ![]() | That is all termite damage covered in dirt/termite shit from the termites making a colony... But it looks like its a dead colony... Even worse news... Cleaned out the closet, and i say to myself "hmm... That sheetrock and wood in the corner looks awfully soft.."... Touch it and it is squishy... Water damage... Looks like what I thought was a minor leak on the living room side of the chimney is actually a fairly decent leak on the bedroom side... I knew the chimney needed to be replaced from the roofline up... But from looking in there so far... Looks like the entire chimney may need to be re-mortared and rebuilt from the roof up.. Unless some HydroLok can be used on a Chimney to seal it all up... Anybody know if I can put in a Homeowners claim for all of this? I know to re-top the chimney i was quoted $3k 5 months ago... I'd love to be able to put in a claim for the cost to fix the termite damage, this water damage, kill the termites, and straighten out the room... |
