Rep Power: 2 ![]() | Well, currently I can not afford a new chimney, and I have a leak coming from it. I found a crack in the brick... Seen here... ![]() ![]() As you can also see in these pics, there was a place for water to pool up and sit which can cause leaks, not to mention cracks in the current patching/flashing. ![]() ![]() Well, in order to fix it, I decided to run some new patching cement across the area. First off, you will need: Duct Tape Roofing Tar/Cement Brick/Roofing Trowel First, clean the area VERY well. Get ALL dirt/mud/leaves/gravel out of the area. I brought a broom on the roof with me. Then layout all of your duct tape around the border of the area you want to work on... Do 2-3 strips wide, to help prevent over drippage (Like I forgot to do)... Some people would say WHY?? When you look at the pictures you will see... Then, go to work... ![]() ![]() ![]() Now you all may be saying, that looks like crap... This is where you peel off the duct tape... ![]() ![]() Is this the right way to fix a roof? No. Will it work? Hopefully. I plan on redoing the chimney next year, which will also remove & fix this the correct way. But in the mean time, i may go around the other 2 sides of the chimney and clean those up with some roof patch to make sure those are good too. |

Rep Power: 10 ![]() | hard to tell from the pics, but did you re-angle the tar so that the water will drip around the chimney now instead of pooling? |

Rep Power: 2 ![]() | Yup. I built it up more around the top near the other roof. I'm going to climb back up there in a day or two once it has settled nicely to reinspect it, and take some more pictures. The only other thing i MIGHT do is replace that piece of vertical flashing on the side of the chimney, because it is peeling away. |

Rep Power: 2 ![]() | Well thats one way to seal it. Not my prefered method but I approve. I like the idea of taping it off and having a clean look vs just smacking all on the brick and shingles. |

Rep Power: 2 ![]() | Difficult , yes !!! Intimidating not so much !!! But hey, whatever works man. We cant all be professionals at everything. Plus this way you can save the wood a little bit longer !!! I never noticed before but you have arciticual shingels. Thats even easier than dealing with 3 tabs IMO!! But either way, Job well done |
