i voted try to save the floors. have a pro come in and take a look and give recommendations. if the flooring is 80 years old, i'd love to try to save it. My hardwoods are 25 years old i have some warps and creeks but i wouldnt replace them for anything.

Can't afford a pro unless it's a free consultation. It'll be a pretty penny to fix the spots where they covered up the old vents.

Originally all the heat vents came up through the floors on the main floor, when they put in the gas furnace, they moved them to the walls.

All they need is sanded down and refinished, which is cheap... but I don't want to spend that money only to find out that the stains go too deep.

It's still a trade off on a really tight budget.

if you do a dark enough stain than it'll cover the stains in the wood.. you may need to do it several times though..

You can do it yourself... Its not difficult... Hell... My sister sanded & stained her floors herself... Took her about a day to do her kitchen & dining room...

Yeah I know I can do it myself... it's just I can't decide which way I want to go. I know laminate would kill the "history" of the home.

The 2 to 1 vote is killin me though. lol

start in a non-used room (like a foyer, or small hall way) where it has one of the worst spots/stains. if it doesn't come off after you've sanded to hell, give up and laminate over it. otherwise, re-finish them

Yeah... What B Said... The house is almost 100 years old... If the floors are original... That can add $$ to the value if you can get them nicely finished...

Don't have a foyer or hallway. It's the floors in the living room/dining room, which are the only way to get from the kitchen to the upstairs.

Pics;

From the stairs going upward (front door on the right of this picture). The arch leads to the dining room;

The dining room, kitchen door is on the left at the backwall;

See those dark spots? They aren't even the worst of it. lol

I know sanding the hell out of these is going to get a lot of it, but I doubt all of it.
