Default Basement Remodel

So this is a post i had over at HS but i wanted to put it in its proper place here.

There are a ton of things we're going to do while we're here at our first house, some are still on the decision block, some are deff getting done.

This project is remodeling our basement. There are a few reason why we want to do this. Some of which include:

No insualation in the entire basement. Not one stich
Wood Panel walls (it's not the 60's anymore)
2x3 framing
Old electric
Primative A/V cable

So we're:...

network the entire house, coax, fiber, cat6, patch panels, svideo, drywall everything, insulate, add drops for 7.1 surround, building a reinforced wall for the 50"+ lcd tv unit, new carpet, new windows, fresh electric, new theatre lighting, fresh paint, etc

Here are some shots of the floor plan when it's all said and done.

(update: everywhere you see 2 network drops its now one figure i dont really need 12 in my house.. one in each room 3 in the office is fine)

Downstairs

Upstairs

Here is some shots of the before and after demo.

(under this window is where the 50 + flat LCD will go (we're reinforcing the stuts here to support it)

(New windows going in place of these POS's *most our heat is out these shit boxes)

(Fucking panel everywhere)

(Going to be all sheet rock)

(People before us' awesome molding job)

(Demo started)

(Panels all gone)

(fucking 2x3's if it was at least 2x4's i wouldnt have to reframe it all.FUCK!)

(Phone line ran INTO the air duct.. awesome...)

(Framings gone)

(the only wall with 2x4's *looking into my office* too bad they built it OVER the fucking paneling.. so thats gonna come down too..)

(looking into my work shop/utility room)

Few more pictures for you all.

Wall being built

Wall hung

We only got to one wall up tonight, granted a large wall. I'm ordering all my networking stuff tonight/tomorrow and working on demoing one more wall and a doorway we didnt think we were tearing out, sealing up some of the masonry, and adding a new joice.

Water proofing on the masonry behind where the TV will be

Random shot of doing it right

Decided to pull out the last wall while we were at it, and again, re-do it right

24' wall up

Boxing out the framing for the breaker box

Wall the Tv will go on framed up. Minus the support for the tv (those cross members are me sketching out where i want the tv i'll be adding major support here soon

2 more walls to go after this guy (back wall in my office)

Discusting single pane aluminum frame window w/ sill framed out

New windows ready to go in

Second to last wall getting framed out

The wall is actually level and plum... think the rafters might be off a bit????

NEW 10/22/2006

Still see the hook ups from the kitchenette, black wire on the left is the main for the oven i guess

Office Wired for electric

Nother wall getting juice

14-2 jungle

New recessed (see diagram for locations)

My office done (just needs RJ drops for the network)

New recessed (very good boxes too.. )

Theater 3 ways and recessed switches

Next on the list, Cat 5e run and insulation. then it's the home stretch!

Next some stuff im getting for the network lol [pushes up glasses]

Red CAT 5e Horizontal UTP Bulk Cable 1000'

Bag of 100 of these

Termination cabinet for the patch panel and switch

Bout 20 of the "21's"

Two of these to organize the cable from the box

12 of these

12 of these

12 of these

12 of these

1 of these 24 port patch panel

1 24 port switch

I'm also getting Verizon's Fios TV and Internet soon as college football season is over, so all these infrastructure is gonna be backed by a 15 gig optic line OMG im a nerd but i love it.

OK time for an update. Been kinda lax around here this past week but we really kicked it in gear the past few days. Check out the pictures

My circuit box, while a very good one, was maxed out so i opted for a new one, with plenty of room.

old box

Old box wires EVERYWHERE

more wires

New breakers too

MMM space for the hot tub hook ups

well thats done

On to the network stuff (that only part i've semi enjoyed so far.. go figure...

Starting..

2 of my office drops

Where it's all gonna end up.

Every room has this hanging out of the wall (at least one set)

Cable/phone/Ethernet all in the bulkhead

Used Stack its to keep it neat.. worked pretty well i think

Thinking about going up over this beam but either way seems pointless.

Phone and Ethernet Done except for adding the plugs and outlet drops (later)

Sigh... only thing left is the cable.. friggin birds nest.

I estimate we're about two-three weeks out from being completely done. I hired a family friend that does it for a living to hang and finish the dry wall. Great price and the way i figure it, I'm a DIY kinda guy but i've never done rock. If i fuck it up i'll be pissed off for 5 years every time i see it.

All thats left now is frame out a small nook for DVD's and CD's, frame out a small section of steps, throw up the insulation (starting that tomorrow, after i finish the cable. Do the windows

Then drywall, add molding and paint. Then flooring. Carpet in the main room, laminet faux wood floor in my office.

So i feel like we made GREAT progress this weekend. Finally starting to see a beginning to an end.

OK MAJOR PROGRESS FOLKS, im sure all of you are tired of reading about this as much as im tired of doing it but here's some pictures.

Drywall celing going up

Covering the bulk head, there goes my cats play area...

wow, a whole wall done.

Wall # 2

Office DONE WITH WINDOWS! im sooo pumped about those windows.. i did a GREAT job on them lol not to brag or anything but that was the only part i was super worried about.. and it was total cake walk.

Main room walled up and a layer of mud on the corners

From the back of the main room looking towards the other side, (center on the other side where the door is laying up on the wall is where the pellet stove will end up being.

Stairs are now officially flush with the top part. I had a picture of me and Kacey building these walls but i cant find it.

So far the bill is up to 3297.32
my estimated final cost is going to be about 5200, my goal was 4-4,500 but i bought 550 bucks worth of attic insulation as well so im probably just around my mark. I'll put up a itemized cost list just incase any of you out there are looking to do it.

Ok so update on the basement. Making great progress, really only thing left is paint, molding and flooring. Then tie in the other ends of the wires (into the router)Then we're done.

All the mud and sanding is done.

Access panel into the drain

All the network drops upstairs are done, just, all the drops in the basement too, just havent added the plates there because we still gotta paint.

In the kitchen :-D

Painting of the walls is done, just got to do the celing (white) then put down the molding then my part will be almost offically done. all i have to do is put in the faux wood flooring in my office and im fucking finished, i cant wait.

Ok so been a while.. holidays etc etc.

So here's the latest update.

Celing has finally been finished so all the painting is DONE (well except for some hand brush touch ups on some of the places i had to resand and throw more mud up and some paintable latex caulk.(btw caulk is the greatest thing ever)

So from there the only things left is flooring, trim and.. well .. thats it.

so here goes.

my papa using the sweet 20 dollar brad/staple nailer from harbor freight (works awesome)

One room down

This is the stairs to the basement, we're painting bottom half the color of the basement, and putting a chair rail to seperate the colors.

Trim around the utility room door is now trimmed

This is the door to my office, the door height was under estimated, which is why i had to redo the header at the top of the door jam (you can see the screws holding it up. I have to mud and paint this, then the door will go on.

Once the door goes on, i can finish the trim in my office which will take maybe 30 mins.

Network "closet" and storage door trimmed out.

I moved my networking stuff off of the house exterior wall. I figured if the shit hits the fan and we get a leak, i'd want this away from the water coming in. You can see the switch is now mounted. That is going to be moved down to allow space for the router AND the new verizion fios modem coming in.

Last thing i have to do is go over my finishing nails with caulk and paint, also need to paint over the "smutz" (the filler between the gaps in trim)

Finally, carpet gets put in this upcoming friday. I decided to carpet my office, because im tired of working on the thing and i just want it done. I dont feel like laying down more padding and putting in a wood floor. Just more hassle.

The very last thing i'll have to do is add some square 4" trim on the inside frame of the closet in my office to cover the 2x4 wood and fill out the space i left. Then make a custom door for my tv room closet that is a odd size 29 1/4 inches (most are 30 inches).

All I've got to say is...

NICE!! Very very nice!

Excellent framing, great job on redoing that electrical panel as well.

I Love the C5e wire management you put in place for the runs through the rafters. Absolutely amazing. I haven't seen clean wire management like that since... well... since I did that on a big wiring job.

On another note; those jacks and plates - I really hate those.

looks awsome I wish I could do that but the ceilings would be a bit too low for me. I may end up finishing part of my basement off where I have my recliners and xbox360

very nice. I am looking at your Ethernet switch can you post a link so I can see which model you used?
I am running Ethernet wire to every room in my house right now but I need a switch right now every thing is going to my wireless router. Why did you decide to go with two Ethernet drops per outlet?

Here is the link to the switch i have Newegg.com - LINKSYS SR216 10/20/100/200Mbps Switch 16 x RJ45 - Retail the only thing i do not like about it, is sometimes you cant do hot connections. Its random but some times whatever im pluging into the wall somewhere has to be shut down and then plugged in then the device started up. And sometimes the router needs to be shut down and restarted. Its really rare, i think it's happened to me twice. Hardly enough to make me not like it. Does what i need it to do.

Well not every outlet has two drops. I sort of customized the drops based on the room i was in. For example, my office has 2 Ethernet outlets with 2 drops each. I think i've used 3 at one time. So it comes in really handy in an office. In my wifes office i have one outlet of 2 Ethernet drops. Most other rooms have the trifecta of Cable/Ethernet/Phone some have a combination of the three or multiple outlets like that per room.

Again its all dependent on what i have in the area of that outlet. I planned out my network very carefully to optimize location and wires.

Edit: Yeah you got the 2 drops per outlet on the schematic i drew up. Yeah that changed lol. I consolidated the outlets. I found some oversized multi connection wall plates
