Default Paint over old bathroom tile

I just inheireted my grandparents 60 year old house which has some pink tile with silver speckles in it. Any suggestions on painting over this? Ive heard it can be done. I even bought a can of spray paint for plastic to see if that would work and it just peeled off with my fingernail.

You need to buy an epoxy paint specifically made for bathrooms / tiles.. You also will need to remember it is NOT easy unless you plan on painting over the caulk... Unless its butted tile and has no caulk lines...

Go to your local home improvement store and they will tell you what to buy...

Am I correct in assuming I need to sand off the glazing on the tile before I paint over it?

Yes, you will need to scuff it to roughen up the surface using a rough scotch brite pad, or some sandpaper..

as Scrapin mention you should just be able to sand down the tile to get the paint to stick. I would prolly use some rough sand paper and move to a fine grit before painting so you dont get the scratch marks in the paint

If this is floor tile don't paint it. Wall tile, get a good bonding primer like Sherwin Williams Bonding primer. With this you don't need to sand it down. This stuff will stick to glass. Then get a quality top coat of your choice.

I dont care what paint you use, in a few years it will look horrible. Then you have a bigger mess at hand. Also if you dont apply the epoxy paint correctly, it wont last 6 months. I say re-tile, or demo and sheetrock. I really dont know what the budget, or quanity of tile that is in the job. Or even the layout.

Like Jeef said, if it is the floor. FORGET about IT!!

I agree. The demo work is free (and fun), sheetrock and spackel(sp?) are cheap. You could probally do the whole bathroom for under $100.
